The originals definitely couldn’t be saved, it was amazing none of them had fell down, I actually went about a third of the way up the one on the west terrace and it was terrifying just how bad a condition it was in.
To replace like for like would have cost a fortune, that’s why most clubs go for this (much poorer) version.

Unfortunately the result didn't match the occasion for Barrow, if my memory serves me correctly we were beaten 9:1 by a very slick professional outfit from Dunfermline.

I had a chuckle to myself last Saturday at our lavish multi ball system. I seem to remember in the dark days we only had a couple of match balls, if the ball went over the stand there would be a mad dash to find it as we couldn’t afford replacements. Thank god we are light years away from those times long may it continue.

Always thought John Duffin’s paintings of the ground of his childhood captured the essence of the old floodlights brilliantly.

Great photos, GT. I remember the thrill as a youngster when these first appeared in late 1963. That photo looking across the rezzer ought to be worth quite a lot of money!

The photos feature about 12 lamps on each pylon but this was a later development when Barrow managed to acquire more powerful spotlights (bought from Everton I think). Originally there were 120 lamps with 30 on each of the 4 pylons . . . one for each of the "spaces" with 6 across and 5 down. There was a full set of 120 working when they started in 1963 but over the years that followed there were nearly always one or two not working at any particular match.

Oh what a night . . . late October back in 63 . . . but it should be said we only lost 1-7 against Dunfermline in the match to officially mark the "unveiling" of the new lights. It should also be pointed out though that that Dunfermline match was not the first match under the new lights, as that had been played a week earlier when we lost 0-2 at home to Doncaster. We had to wait a little while for our first win under those lights and I think this came on November 4th when we beat Preston 6-2 in the Lancs Senior Cup. Our first league win under the lights was on New Years Day 1964 when we beat Chesterfield 5-2.

Morecambe fan in peace.

Those floodlights are truly iconic.

My first ever visit to Holker Street was on Boxing Day 1987 and my dad kindly drove me to the game. It was in fact my first EVER away game with Morecambe and the sight of those floodlights in the distance as we approached the ground has stuck with me ever since. Hard to put it into words but it was a thought along the lines of, "this is some ground this" and feeling a bit worried about what was to come that afternoon (if that sounds understandable?)

Many many visits since - both with Morecambe - and as a neutral.
