Not a Barrow AFC story but deserves a wider audience. Sadly our own Hairy bikes Dave Myers has passed away aged 66 after his cancer battle

Very sad to hear, he always tried promoting Barrow as a town when he could, had a feature on the one show as well once, met the guy in the market and he he was spot on.

So sad. Dave was a couple of years above me at BGS. Even at that time it was known that he spent a lot of time looking after his mother and of course he had quite a few issues of his own to overcome not least of which was his alopecia which made him easily recognisable. Like Dave and many other students I also did a stint at the old steelworks as a summer job.

He became a bit of a national treasure not by design but by his incredible enthusiasm and his utterly likeable personality. He also clearly loved the town and his roots all his life. When you leave the town to pursue whatever career you choose some will lose the connection. But for others such as Dave the bond actually strengthens. He was a true son of Barrow.

I know of many ex-pat and local BAFC supporters, quite a few of who are members of this forum who knew Dave far better than I and I’m sure they will be shocked and saddened by this news.

So sad I really enjoyed his programmes. As he said once "you can leave Barrow but you can never take the lad out of Barrow". He was so proud of his home town.

As others have said never missed a chance to give the old town a mention in his programmes. Never met him as an adult but as a young kid saw him many times when he regularly waited outside the gates at the Paper Mills for his dad to finish work. A sad loss.

He was a really nice guy.I was coming out of MS with my wife a few years ago.loaded up.with shopping and without being prompted open the side door into Scott St and even asked if we wanted a hand.An ordinary guy who was pleasant no.matter who.he met and never forgot his roots after such a tough upbringing helping to.look after his mother when he was still at school

A Barrovian through and through who loved this town and was a diamond of a man . He often had a hard time at school because of his Alopecia, but those schoolfriends and colleagues who knew him, loved him. I worked with him at the Steelworks and it was a truly memorable 2 + weeks shutdown. He never forgot us and we won't forget him. RIP you beauty.

Dave has departed this life rather earlier than perhaps might be expected. However, there is a rare poetic justice to the way his life unfurled. Having to bear the responsibility of cooking for his family whilst still a boy and also having to deal with the trauma of alopecia, especially as a teenager, it seems like some sort of glorious balancing of the scales that he later went on to find fame and fortune as a hairy cook! It's as though life recompensed him for his trials and tribulations as a boy and that much is enormously pleasing. God bless him as he hopefully continues on the road beyond.

A round of applause from all on Tuesday Night would be a fitting tribute for a true Son of Barrow. Dave brought happiness and warmth to millions and always made me feel proud to be Barrovian.
