That Acquah Goal: Probably an all-time Top Tenner

I did a very rough and ready estimate and I reckon I have probably seen somewhere approaching 3000 goals scored by Barrow. That's a lot, but I think Acquah's goal is a genuine contender for a place in my all time Top 10. It's not number 1 as I've got something else in mind for that from long ago but it could well be in the Top 10.

It's difficult I know as it's a bit subjective. For me, even though strikes from distance are great to watch I generally favour goals that involve teamwork and an interchange of passes that show the team in perfect synchrony. But this Acquah goal was a bit special not just because of the perfect strike but because there was nothing on when he received the ball and yet he weaved his way into space despite three defenders in close attendance before unleashing that perfect curling shot into the top corner. Magnificent, absolutely magnificent.

I have in my mind's eye similar strikes from the same position by (I think) Josh Gordon and Ben Whitfield. I can't remember the occasions though. I agree that Acquah's goal was special because of the way he created from a not very promising position. I do think he could become a Barrow favourite, with the strength and ability to score goals like Quigley used to do.

I believe I know the goal you're referring to by Josh Gordon - the one that was intended as a cross into the box - but flew into the net. That was a fluke.

The goal by Acquah was intentional and therefore sheer class.

I hope we'll see him score more goals like that. However, I doubt it. Enjoy the memory. The difference between a Div 2 footballer and a Premier League footballer is consistency. Alas, I doubt whether we'll see him score another like that for a very long time, if ever again. At least he's ended his goal drought. As long as he keeps on banging them in is what counts.

Micky Richmond goal in a 2-2 draw against Man City in September 1982 has to be up there (it was a testimonial match or something). Up there with Brad Barry's goal in the 2-2 draw away at Chesterfield (24 August 2019) as the best goals i've seen by a Barrow defender.
