Daily Telegraph story - Bonus Scheme

Post by FanzoneFan » Sat Sep 14, 2024 8:27 am

I’ll try to link the whole story but apparently our players will get a £1k a man bonus if we lose against Chelsea but only a £250 if we win. The article goes on to say it raises the potential concerns about the integrity of the competition. It’s the first time the EFL has encountered a club offering more money to lose rather than win a match. The oversight is because of the way we’ve structured the bonus scheme, the players get more money when we play Premier League opposition and the club are now going to have to change it. I guess when the contracts were written nobody expected us to play a Premier League Club.

There has been lots of press coverage on this.;

Sounds like a pre agreed deal to the players before a ball had been kicked in the competition that if we were to draw a premiership side and get knocked out from the third round the players would receive a bonus. So a bit of play on words from the press.
Does need a bit of clarity from the club though as I’m sure the EFL will be scrutinising all the dots and crossed t’s.

Win Bonus

Post by Methuselah » Sat Sep 14, 2024 12:01 pm

Is it true that if our players go onto lose against Chelsea they will get a bigger player bonus than if they win.If it is true it,s disgusting, because what motivation will our players to go on and win the game.
What about all the supporters who are spending good money to go and watch them play at Chelsea and in midweek.
I want to see them put up a decent display and if we still get beaten fair enough, but the last think I want is the players deliberately throwing the game.Surely it is against the rules and players have been prosecuted in the past for match fixing.

talk SPORT have been talking about this and there conclusion seemed to be that it challenges the integrity of the competition. Apparently they contacted Barrow afc who told them that a mistake has been made. Considering these bonuses have to be declared to the EFL prior to the competition starting , surely a huge mistake on the club's offer, our players accepting and the EFL for not noticing.

There are many ways in which this error could be rectified either before or after the game.

Innocent mistake it may be, but I think the club will have to do something now. It’s quite possible that Chelsea will win this match by several goals.l If that happens you can imagine the headlines regarding the issue of whether our players might have deliberately lost the match.

To paraphrase Mario Ballatelli … Why always us?

Players have banked £1000 for getting to this round? That’s their incentive to win the early games and getting a decent draw. Now another £250 up for grabs if they beat Chelsea?
Beat Chelsea they’ll have £1,250 banked and potentially the best night of most of their careers. Lose and they’ve got £1000 banked and potentially the biggest game of most of their careers

Hardly shocking.

Biggest question for me is how the tabloids managed to get hold of the information

Well if that’s the case then that’s ok. That’s not what seems to be inferred from the article though. Or is this just a story to mix some stats and create a false narrative?

Whatever were we to actually beat Chelsea, ridiculous as that sounds, some way should be found to top up their bonuses. It wouldn’t be that difficult to do.

100% this.

Whichever player/agent/golf club member leaked this needs investigating and dealing with appropriately.

Remember we are Barrow and still learning, we try our best but it’s never good enough still could be worse think about Man City.

I suspect it is just a case of an imprecisely written clause. A logical bonus structure would be to pay the players out for getting a money-generating fixture, but the article reads to me as if we've erroneously priced ourselves in as definitely losing said fixture. It would make sense if "£x a round + £y if we're knocked out by a Premier League side" was intended to be "£x a round + £y for every Premier League tie".

Agree the big story is the meddling.

Brain dead if you think anyone starting that game is going to go out there and happily get rolled over

So,in a nutshell if we lose at Chelsea there will be match-fixing ivestigations stretching to UEFA and a strong possibility of points deductions etc. Worrying
