Sounds exactly the type of player they spoke about signing at the fans forum. Hard working gives 100% and gets stuck in. Wigan fans liked him for his 100% work rate and think he will do well in league 2

71 games and 1 goal and no assists is not a inspiring record for a midfielder.
My fear is we are loosing players of calibre and will replace them with lesser players.

Oh dear Pedro you been on that negativity juice again
Scoring goals and assists isn’t his game. Breaking the game up winning the ball back and keeping it simple is his game. Wigan fans on twitter were complimentary and said he was a good signing for us at league two level
An example is the following. “ Very, very good league 2 player. Needs people around him that suit him but he'll work his arse off. Good luck.”

He doesn't need to prove anyone wrong. If League 2 is his level it could be good for all concerned. He clearly hasn't been signed to score goals.

Barrow AFC are delighted to announce that Wigan Athletic midfielder Scott Smith will join The Bluebirds on a free transfer from July 1st, subject to EFL approval.



The 24-year-old midfielder becomes our first recruit of the summer after putting pen to paper on a two-year deal at The SO Legal Stadium.



Smith has spent the entirety of his career to date at The Brick Community Stadium, where in total he made 94 appearances for Wigan, scoring two goals.



The dynamic midfielder also came through the youth ranks at Athletic, totalling an impressive 12-year association with his boyhood side.



He made his professional debut for his hometown team against Hull City in the Carabao Cup in August 2022.



Arguably, his real breakthrough season came in the 2023/2024 campaign, when he was selected as the Away Supporters’ Player of the Year.



Last season, the former Wales youth International played 46 times for Ryan Lowe’s side, including 39 appearances in England’s third tier.



Speaking about joining Barrow, Smith said: “It feels really good to be here, I’ve had a great morning up at Barrow with my agent, the manager, and the people behind the scenes at the club, so everyone’s welcomed me really nicely and I look forward to getting going.”



Smith added: “I think the interest I’ve had from Barrow and the way they’ve gone about it put them head and shoulders above the rest as I’ve had a lot of offers, but this one was the one that massively stood out to me.”



Head Coach Andy Whing also said: “We’ve been targeting Scott for quite a while now, and he played a lot of football in League One last season, he’s got a lot of the qualities I think we need.



“Scott loves a tackle, and I think the fans will love the way he plays and the aggressiveness within his game, and I think he’ll be a fantastic signing for us.”

We needed a replacement for Gotts hard work and this lad has played in league 1 so no slouch just the type of player we need!

No I've just read the forum with the statement on releasing players before he joined us.
As I said he needs to prove them wrong.
Yes I saw the breaking up play and noted someone in here said he had 11 yellows.

I’m not sure how a player with more than 70 League 1 appearances over the last two seasons could be considered a lesser player than Robbie Gotts who has yet to play a single League 1 fixture.

This looks like as close a replacement fit for Gotts as you could ever hope to get. Also like the words being used by both the club and player about each other. Seems to be in keeping with the slightly tougher combative style Whing wants. A good age too. And free.

I’d say that was a pretty good and immediate response to Gotts departure.

11 Yellows that's only 3 more than Robbie gotts had last season and this lad played more games than Gottsy last season. IIRC Smith got Wigans travelling supporters player of the year the season before last.
