To be honest Jackson while brilliant going forward isn't a lot better than Newby at tackling but unfortunately Whing wants this set up ,playing wingback is really tough and physically demanding and if the back 3 don't do their job's you become exposed, like I said previously WE need to work on how we play this system and Whing often then changes shape, this will take at least 10 games before we get (hopefully) fine tuned !Jim wrote: ↑Mon Aug 04, 2025 11:36 amSince we have had a forum, there has always been one. Room for improvement certainly but I’m a bit non-pluses by this scapegoating of Newby.
As I mentioned in a previous thread, one reason Newby is selected may be that he was second only to Jackson for assists last season.

Erm didn’t we sign Aquah from a team lower than us now sold on. Spence came from Halifax did great for us. Stanway from Chester, Booty from Gateshead , Fletcher from Spennymoor. I’d say we have done well with signings from clubs in lower leagues than us. and unearthed some good players. I suspect Stanway will make us a bit of money during the next 12 months if he carries on improving like he has since he came into the side

Last season? How many seasons has it been now? Same old crack - no decent strikers.Pedro wrote: ↑Sat Aug 02, 2025 9:36 pmThought we had a solid defence?Jonty wrote: ↑Sat Aug 02, 2025 9:18 pm
This is the biggest takeaway from this game for me. Just watched the highlights and both teams will have plenty more to come but there was little in it. Different styles of football, so they will look at the possession stats but the actual shots and chances in the game fell pretty even.
The goal was a shocker though, a free header and we will need to cut that out.
That back line against a young winger will be mincemeat.
Experience but old and slow
Last season we could not put chances away ,we need to be taking our chances
Some excellent crosses into the box during the game but nobody there on the end of them.
An OAP - wearing a blindfold - would have scored the goal that Cameron missed
I didn't think Chesterfield looked like a team destined for promotion. There'll be far more harder nuts to crack this season - starting next Saturday. The money that's been paid out by The Dons for their strike force could result in a goal feast. Unfortunately, I can only see it as being one way traffic.
With no quality upfront I think it's going to be a long hard season for The Bluebirds...

We could put Arthur Scargill in the 9 shirt and there would still be complaints about lack of a proper striker.
As for Newby, I agree that he is very much an attribute to the side and regular selection from various managers who will know far about judging a player than me tells it's own story.
As always, a story has been built from those who can only see any negatives in a player. We have seen this happen with a number over the years, in my time from Jackie Madison forward. Interestingly, locals seem disproportionately affected.
Sound performance on Saturday. We could have won it and the frustration of those who were unable to take their chances was evident.
Whing’s interview referred to above was post-match, was it not? Either way, the sleepless nights, far from communicating a lack of confidence, remind us that we have a determined and committed manager who is prepared to communicate in a clear, unvarnished manner.
As was the case last season, we should be targeting an automatic promotion place. Time will tell.

Well Whing’s comment was unfortunate as it was quoted by the Football League paper in their review of the game. It made an already pro-Chesterfield report look even worse for us.Hadrian wrote: ↑Mon Aug 04, 2025 1:59 pm We could put Arthur Scargill in the 9 shirt and there would still be complaints about lack of a proper striker.

Wasn’t able to watch the game but the stats look awful and independent reports suggest we contributed very little apart from Camerons miss. Not sure where all the “we could have won the game” stuff comes from.

If we could get hold of T Smith who can offer a real goal threat, then we might just be in with a 'real' chance of winning a few.

Stats can be very misleading and having watched the game I’m confident we will be fine this season and if you had watched it like many I am sure would concur. Even Chesterfield representative in after match interview said we are a good side and Barrow probably felt they deserved a draw at leastSuffolk Blue wrote: ↑Mon Aug 04, 2025 2:37 pm

Thought it was a fair result myself. If we'd got the equaliser, then Chesterfield couldn't have complained as we would both have taken our chance but as it was, 1-0 was about right on the day.Main Stand SeasonTct wrote: ↑Mon Aug 04, 2025 3:03 pmStats can be very misleading and having watched the game I’m confident we will be fine this season and if you had watched it like many I am sure would concur. As for Cameron's miss. Whilst it wasn't great, it was no worse than their 1 on 1 that Stanway saved after their striker overran it.

Correct Scargill would not be appreciated a flip like our recent forwards.Hadrian wrote: ↑Mon Aug 04, 2025 1:59 pm We could put Arthur Scargill in the 9 shirt and there would still be complaints about lack of a proper striker.

He would be one of those players who would always give you a Hospital pass.
Scargills nephew played for us for Goole Town and was no better.
We've seen a succession of Strikers who flopped.
Aquah and Pressley both yet to score after 2 games each at their new clubs.
if we get a decent centre forward we won't moan if only we had a Director of Football

We have one but under a different title. He is Sporting Director Iain Wood and an Head of Football Operations Joe Harvey together with Andy Whing they make an excellent recruitment team.Given the financial restraints Wood and Harvey along with previous and current managers have recruited well in IMO.

Andy Whing's 'sleepless nights' comment showed to me how much he cares. I don't think for one moment he was questioning the ability of his players (if that's what you're suggesting, SB) but, rather, his own. "Have I got the right mix?"; "Have we done enough in training?" etc, etc.Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Mon Aug 04, 2025 2:37 pmWell Whing’s comment was unfortunate as it was quoted by the Football League paper in their review of the game. To date 2 games. two defeats.
He made Paul Simpson sound interesting when managing Carlisle .
Yes Stanway and Winterbottom both good prospects and I think
they were both brought in with a view to selling one of them.
Yep think Spence was brought in by Wild ,Gotts was brought in in by someone else so nothing to do with Woods.
Campbell not sure but all went for nothing.
