Yes we have brought 9 players in during the window - but some people are forgetting that 5 players have left too during that same time;-
1) Reid (back to Birmingham. 2) Biggins (back to David Dunn), 3) Courtney Baker-Richardson (loan to Barnet). 4 Dior Angus (signed for Wrexham) and 5) Jack Hindle (released at end of contract). Added to that we have also had to replace Mike Jones.
So we've basically got 3 more players than we had before.
Add to that Morgan Penfold - i have no problem if he's furloughed - because he was on a season long loan at FC United whose season was stopped - and all the other players who were there have been furloughed.... so why shouldn't he be allowed the same?
yes it's not a great look for the club, but it's allowed in the same way it's allowed for people to have been furloughed from one job for the last 12 months or so and then ended up working full time or part time doing another job and getting paid for that and the furlough...

So anyone who doesn’t agree with this decision shouldn’t be allowed back in Holker Street? Right oh

Still think people aren’t being completely honest about the meltdown on here if another relegation rival did this exact same scenario rather than us; but there you go, everyone gets blinkered towards their own club

This is exactly it - not many people had good things to say about this scheme when it was just Chesterfield doing it (see page 1). Are those people 'trolls'?
It's not the use of the furlough scheme that people have an issue with, it's signing a whole new squad and then pleading poverty.

Spot on. The way this has been done does not sit right with myself and many others on here.
And I certainly take offence at being called a Troll that should never set foot back in Holker Street as a fan of 40 years that has been to many hundreds of games home and away.

Now that the initial response to his action has to some extent subsided there are a couple of things worth saying.

Firstly irrespective of the rights and wrongs of this matter, I personally think that the general response - being one of discomfort with the ethics or morality of the decision - has actually cheered me up a bit. It does really show that for the bulk of BAFC supporters, then what they perceive as integrity matters. It also matters to me that the supporters as well as the club do not simply pursue objectives with a totally single minded, means justify the ends attitude.

Secondly, having said that, ethics and morality in football at this level and beyond, whilst often talked about, do not rank as high as they should. Whilst the furloughing issue is a hot topic with us and will probably lead to poor PR coverage, especially amongst other supporters, I'm pretty sure that many other EFL clubs are actively considering it. I doubt you'll see officials from many of them wanting to lob in a negative quote for that reason.

Thirdly when you strip away the ethical issue you are left simply with what is legal and what is not. Legally as has been pointed out by a couple of posters, furloughing our staff does not constitute even a grey area. It is HMRC approved. You can only do it if they say "yes". Not that its totally relevant but having spent an entire career working in Private Sector finance I can say quite honestly that I've witnessed actions that would make you personally shudder regarding the treatment of corporate tax for example, that not only have been subsequently approved by HMRC but have been actively supported by them. When it comes to payment or avoidance of taxes, the authorities have as much integrity in their demands as do their clients. Government would like you to think that paying taxes is a moral issue but they act very differently.

And lastly, if we are genuinely concerned about the use of taxpayers money in this way to bolster our club whilst we continue to invest in our squad then before we chuck rocks just bear in mind what is going on in the NL currently. That whole fiasco started when the Government via the DCMS and the FA made a £10m grant (tax payers money) to Non-League clubs allowing them to commence their season. Once HMG suggested that further support to these clubs should be by way of fixed term low interest loans (i.e. pay the tax payer back) the kick back started. Interestingly this is now being flogged by the NL as a moral issue when it clearly isn't. Whilst many clubs are in dire need of support, the likes of Notts County, Stockport etc. have continued to strengthen their squads whilst being quite happy to take some more. You'll also notice that the NL will now receive funding for weekly COVID testing. This has come apparently from the NL board. I wonder where they got the money from? Ironically the EFLs rescue package came from the Premiership and funding for testing came from the PFA - both privately funded.

Its really easy to portray the owners as villains in this matter. But we dont live in their world and the rules of the game in their world are not made by them. That doesn't mean I'm happy with this decision. But I do understand the circumstances in which it has been made.

What a bunch of jobsworth politically correct people who cares what furlough is for the clubs using it to there advantage so if it helps us financially so what you do what you have to do to survive so what if we brought 8/9 players in and then furlough some of the old players its a win win for the club let the government pay furlough there the people that have made a mess of the pandemic so make use of one of the better schemes they have came up with.
