Football has evolved in the last 20 years and now a striker needs to do a lot more than just score. He’s not in the team to be our out and out striker banging goals every game. Holloway’s game is to bring the ball down or win the header for the other striker to play off. That’s where the problem lies.Sea Dog Sam wrote: ↑Thu Apr 21, 2022 4:18 pm Personally I would say that 107 EFL appearances in three seasons, a third of them in League One, was a
Why do you consider 'appearances' to be a more attractive stat?
If he was signed for other abillities why is he being played in a striker's role? He's also listed as being a striker. To me, a stiker is someone who scores goals! He doesn't.

I agree with you to a certain degree. However, to be a striker you have to score goals. How do you know what Holloway's game is? Or what he was signed for?bamber678 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 21, 2022 6:41 pmFootball has evolved in the last 20 years and now a striker needs to do a lot more than just score. Your correct, a striker does need to be able to score goals. It's been our downfall all season and the only reason why its taken us this long to secure a place in the league. You can see how much AAH's confidence has grown in the past few games since hes started training more with the squad (crazy that he was signed to train once a week) and the ball is definitely being played through him as a target man. I don't think he's lost out on an aerial battle in the last 3 games or if he has its not many.Sea Dog Sam wrote: ↑Mon Apr 25, 2022 3:20 pmI agree with you to a certain degree. Re: Holloway (striker)
If you think about the strikers on the books , we have Gordon, Luke James, Sea. Holloway is way ahead of the others. The Phil Brown way direct suits Holloway. If PB stays I’d try and keep him. He’s obvs not a goal machine but since Brown came and after the initial 3 games , he’s been a revelation; skilful strong and enables the team to get up the pitch and stay there. Suddenly we score 6 and he’s got 2 plus assists. He’s going to need someone up front with him but of the others only Gordon really scores and not many. So bring in a nippy poacher as second striker - let James. Sea and Gordon go and I think we’d be looking good. To imagine we’re suddenly going to find a 20 goal striker to come to Barrow is fanciful at best.

Good goal at Salford, and good header v FGR.Desmond2-2 wrote: ↑Sun Apr 10, 2022 10:15 am It’s the fact, he’s our main striker(allegedly) we are almost relying on him to keep us in the football league, and I have no confidence he will score, ever. He’s had chances but actually looks scared when he gets an opportunity. He never controls the ball and attempts to take on the defender, has he actually had a shot on target? I guess his record of 14 goals in 11 seasons says it all, there are goalkeepers with better stats![]()

couldn't disagree more strongly - a positive manager imposing positive attitudes on the squad is again showing the sort of promise that the squad displayed at the start of the season.behind the goals wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 8:19 pmThank God for those 7pts not too bad for a utter utter utter garbage squad.mickycarrol wrote: ↑Sat Apr 09, 2022 9:36 pm He’s on a par with Zanzalla however it’s unfair to pick him out of a squad where there’s probably about 15 others who are absolute bobbins also.

Re: Holloway (striker)
I'm with you on this Hadrian. I don't agree for one moment that the squad is "utter, utter, utter garbage." We have some good players and I think everyone knows the problem has been our total inability to get forward and pose a goal threat. I think the recent evidence has shown that the problem has been our approach to games rather than the personnel. Back in September we were looking useful - - - not top-of-the-table stuff but very capable of holding our own in this league. I think of the stirring second half against Newport when we overwhelmed them. At that stage it seemed we might trouble the play-offs. But around that time something changed and it changed badly. I think that "something" was in the psyche of Mark Cooper and only he perhaps might be able to explain why. We became ultra-cautious in our play to the point where we almost looked frightened to attack. We stopped scoring and the morale of the whole squad fell off a cliff. It was as if both players and fans didn't believe we could score goals. To paraphrase Paul Simon in a footballing context, "scorelessness like a cancer grows". I think a sweeping paranoia about our hopelessness up front damaged the whole squad and of course it affected defenders too as they must have thought they could not afford to concede even once as it would mean game over.Hadrian wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 9:56 pmcouldn't disagree more strongly - a positive manager imposing positive attitudes on the squad is again showing the sort of promise that the squad displayed at the start of the season.behind the goals wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 8:19 pm

I believe there is more quality in the squad than that drought period suggested. Of course that's not to say we should just go with the current bunch and not try to strengthen for next season - - - it's just to cut them some slack and say there's far more quality in the squad than the phrase "utter, utter, utter garbage" would suggest.
Re: Holloway (striker)
Good point PJ. As I mentioned a while back, I believe the clue was in a post match interview after a game when the defence had given away once more a soft goal or goals. Cooper said something to the effect that things were going to change and he was going to tighten up the defence. The next game was the bore draw at Carlisle, so he had kept his word - but to the detriment of our attack. By the time the lack of goals problem had dawned, the team was in the collective mindset of not taking any risks and it just became ingrained.pjdaly wrote: ↑Fri Apr 29, 2022 11:51 am But around that time something changed and it changed badly. 15 goals a season? Where you getting that from, fella? Can you name a club he's scored 15 goals a season for? And if you're referring to Barrow - can you see into the future?saltcellar wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 8:39 pm1 goal every 3 games for Barrow = 15 goals a season.Sea Dog Sam wrote: ↑Thu Apr 28, 2022 2:25 pm He can't score goals, though!
