Unexpectedly Good Days Out

Post by barrowaberdeen » Thu Feb 25, 2016 9:09 pm

No, I don't mean yer Wembley's and yer Lowestofts, I mean home or away where a less than promising destination or state of affairs meant nothing, as you had such a good craic, team did well or crowd were unexpectedly good. Here are 3 off the top of my head:

Histon away, the week before the Trophy final (?) everyone in a great mood despite the journey and despite the temporary blindness caused by very good beer went on to save a well struck penalty during a half time pitch invasion.

Boston away last season for the acid house revival on the way home.

Home to North Ferriby last season. We put a really bad away trip at Brackley behind us and backed the side to the hilt on a night game to win. Andy Wood gave my lad a lift down from Carlisle and insisted on running him 30 miles out of his way to his door on the way back- top man.

All away days for me!

Telford when we didn't get segregated a great boozer and their supporters not enjoying mingling, or our celebrations!

Colwyn Bay two seasons ago on Saint Davids day with our Dewi and those welsh cakes!

And yes Boston first game of last season we got beat but a top day out and a great bus trip home!

Many more to come hopefully :D

Not quite sure what your post is about Steve, unless you are bored with no footie.Memories section.

Redditch away 2008 absolutely class trip from start to finish absolutely steaming that day.

Workington away boxing day the other year great sing song in the boozer before hand and a massive win great scenes at the end.

There have been many good away days very rarely I don't enjoy them.

I think I prefer watching us away than at home

Enfield replay at Kidderminster, great day out on the mini bus, good set of lads on it, plenty of beer & plenty of laughs (oh yes Binny, we STILL remember)

Colne Dynamos FAT and making the mistake of letting our mate from Barrow but living in Colne at the time get our tickets......straight into the home supporters end and greeted with one of the lads getting a meat & potatoe pie shoved in his face before the police rescued us & allowed us in with our supporters!!

Agree with Chris, Wukkie away a couple of years ago on Boxing Day. Great atmosphere in that pub and a result that lifted the gloom and set us on that great run away from what looked like certain relegation.

Loads of others, especially the Tuesday night games at Macclesfield, Alty, Chorley etc in the late 80's early 90's.
We didn't underestimate them, we just didn't think they were that good.

Aii any away day where we've come back to win from behind... Wukkie on Boxing Day was class, Chester in the trophy, Braintree from 2-0 down.

Ebbsfleet away a few years ago was one of those unexpectedly good ones. 4-1 win away from home, Chadwick hattrick, met a large Dover contingent who stood and learnt all our songs before joining in themselves.

I prefer the away games to the home games

My favs are when I've been on the bus also had some great days out with some of the Manchester Barrow fans - less enjoyable when I travel on my own.

Workington away on Boxing Day was good / Chester in the trophy great day out

I think these have been mentioned but Braintree away when we came back from 2-0 down, the 5-0 win at Redditch in promotion season and an unlikely win at Dartford with a Richie Baker (pen I think) must be up there in recent seasons. From further back the high scoring win at Boston, the FA Trophy semi replays against Enfield and the final few away games that we won in the season we were kicked out of Conference after surviving on the pitch (Stevenage, Cheltenham and Kiddy I think). Kiddy is always a good day out. My memory of these games is awful as well.

I enjoy pretty much every away day (despite the football sometimes) but a few lowlights on the flipside would be Atherstone for obvious reasons, Afreton on a Tuesday when we lost 4-0 and basically stopped playing and finally Hereford losing 2-1 with 10 men after McConville unexplicably tried his hand at goalkeeping. I think what was worst about the last one was we knew we were on cheap London Midland trains into and out of Birmingham on the way back to London and faced an almost 4 hour journey home so plenty of beer was purchased from the local Morrisons for the journey home i seem to remember.

Good call on Chester - I had forgotten that one

Just trying to cheer everyone up a bit GT pal, so much whinging and whinging about whinging on here. We go to football because we love it, whatever way you want to spend the day itself.

I can think of a good few crackers you've been on Graham!

+1 - Great idea Steve.

Most have been said - Redditch, Chester, Boston, Wukkie.

Will also throw in Cambridge (09/10) Kiddy and Oxford in the cup (08/09)

Luton away was decent in the beer garden prior to the game (not sure on the year)

Moved out of the Lancaster uni halls in 1994 to a brilliant little street right behind Christie Park, Morecambe outskirts (Rosebery Ave). Moved in on a Monday and the very next night Morecambe were at home to Barrow. You couldn't make it up I thought.

Anyway, long story short, a mate came through from Barrow and, steaming after several quickfire beers in their clubhouse, we watched Barrow win 3.1.

Brilliant.

In recent times, coming back from 2 down at Braintree to win 3-2, Nick Rogan's injury time equalisers at Wrexham and Mansfield in the first season back up after winning the playoffs. Best though would have to be Eastbourne on the last day of that same season, particularly the pub pre-match.

Going back further, I remember a late winner at Accrington in the late 90s on a Tuesday night that sparked crazy scenes (Mark Grugel I think?). But my favourite would without doubt be the 5-3 win at Boston, also in the late 90s. Neil Morton 4 goals, Grugel again and Bastock sent off. Fantastic stuff!
