Stockport Tomorrow

A bit late notice, I know but....Hopefully,despite the distance, a few of you will be coming down to Stockport for tomorrow's friendly game.

I am part of a Co-operative that just over 18 months ago purchased "Ye Olde Vic" pub in Edgeley, Stockport to stop it being demolished.

Our normal Saturday hours are 5:00pm -11:00pm, but we open at 12:30pm when County are at home. We are particularly welcoming to away fans. We would like to extend a similar invitation to Macc fans.

There should be six real ales on. We do operate a no swearing policy, which might appear a little draconian, but we find it ensures the pub remains a 'safe haven' for all and it is generally appreciated.Families are welcome. We do not do food however, so line your stomachs beforehand!

The pub is located at the corner of Chatham St and King St West (SK3 9ED) and less than 10 minutes’ walk from Edgeley Park. It is only a matter of yards from the Edgeley Approach to Stockport Station.

We look forward to seeing some of you on Saturday.

P.S. Anyone old enough to remember George Whitelaw. Played for County in the early 60's and then moved to Barrow. Despite a frame that suggested he liked a pint or two, he was a decent player in a really poor County team. He also enjoyed a laugh on the pitch when that wasn't considered unprofessional. I think Barrow may have suited him, being nearer his native Scotland.

They played Macclesfield last week, he just forgot to edit some of the text. Would of probably called in if I was making the journey.

That name, George Whitelaw, had me turning to the Barrow stats books. I have to say I have zero recollection of him but will almost certainly have watched him play. He was with us in the 1963-64 season and played only 7 matches, all wearing the number nine shirt. The number nine shirt was well shared out that season, with Whitelaw, Ernie Ackerley, Stan Howard and TC Anderson (another player I have no recollection of) all having spells wearing it. Whitelaw didn't score a single goal for us. In the seven matches he featured in we drew two and lost five. Within that framework of just 7 matches we experienced defeats by the scores of 5-0, 8-2 and 7-1. Fair to say we weren't very good in season 1963-64. Fair to say we finished rock bottom of Division 4.

Although I cannot recall George Whitelaw I certainly DO recall one particular match he played in. I well remember I was sat in front of the TV on Saturday 30th November 1963 as the football results were read out on a grainy black-and-white screen on Grandstand (Final Score as it is now). This was a match away at Aldershot and it was Whitelaw's penultimate match for us. I well remember the screen scrolling down from the Division 3 results to the Division 4 results and my jaw dropping as Len Martin solemnly read out "Aldershot 8 Barrow 2". I had never thought it possible that Barrow could do that. I was young and naive.

It was several months before George Whitelaw played his final game for us (a 7-1 away defeat at Bradford City on 4th April 1964) and the records suggest he then moved to St Johnstone.
