I met him at the Fred Else book event at Hawcoat Park. He came along with Tom Finney and the ex-PNE players association. Nice bloke, iirc.

He was in the twilight of his career when he played for us, not as mobile as he was in his younger days, but his class was always evident and was an important factor in our success in 66-67.

Very sorry to learn of this. From the top of my head I think Pilky had a difficult debut for Barrow when we were beaten 0-5 at home by Millwall, a match that was featured in a programme on the TV about the town of Barrow generally (and presented by Danny Blanchflower).

Never mind, a couple of years later he went on to become an integral member of the 1966-67 promotion-winning side. His class was obvious to anybody who saw him play, the class that made him a League Champion with Burnley in 1960 and which brought him his one England cap. He retired from the full-time game after playing in his usual number 11 shirt in the promotion-clinching match against Brentford on May 6th 1967 and his role the following season in the 3rd Division was filled by new signing, Dave Storf.

Sadly, of the regular eleven who turned out for us in 66-67 more than half have now passed on. I believe only Malcolm Edwards, George Smith, Brian Arrowsmith, Roy McCarthy and Tony Field are now left (along with substitutes Mick Hartland and Ron McGarry).

Skipper - I believe Pilky was something like Treasurer or Secretary of Chorley FC for a number of years and I understand he was here on occasions whenever Chorley came to Holker Street, at least until the late 1990's I think.

I realise only a small minority will be old enough to remember Pilky but the fact remains he was one of the heroes of the side that won us promotion to Division 3 back in 1967.

Yes, we definitely should have a tribute to Brian. He played an important part in the promotion winning side, and although to, I guess, the majority of our current supporters he is just a name in the record books, to us who were around in the sixties he was one of our heroes.
