Worst Away Days

If we have a best away days thread then lets have a worst one as well.

Mine is...... Atherstone

Could write a book about the experiences me and my son had that day and one day I may recount my tale. But I've been in some dodgy situations particularly following Man United in the 70's and 80's away. But Atherstone is right up there I think because we were just not expecting it to happen.

Shaw Lane away for me in recent years...
Absolutely embarrassing result. Crash in the way home so it took nearly 6 hours from Barnsley to Barrow.

Dover away this season didn't get into Barrow until 7am. Honestly it might have been a nice story for the media us sharing a coach with the players but it was a rotten trip home took forever.

Atherstone wasn't fun nether was Barnsley, Fleetwood and Goole could have turned out different.
Bromley just because it took for ever to get home.

Leaving aside Atherstone 6 months earlier in 2013 the defeat at Alfreton 4-0 on a freezing April night which more or less relegated was awful. The team literally fell apart in the second half when a useful Alfreton team put us to the sword. It was just about the end for Dave Bayliss - I actually wished him luck before the game when he was standing by the tunnel - he just smiled I got the impression he knew the game was up.

Stafford away, 1972-73. I was in Coventry at the time, so this was the first match I had seen since losing our League status. I hitch-hiked up the M6 to get there. We lost 7-0. Three years earlier we had been top of Division 3. I remember standing there feeling sick as each goal went in, wondering how on earth had it come to this?

Rushden & Diamonds. Nene Park (RIP) - a ground between two villages in the middle of nowhere. At one time my closest away game in the NL. Three visits. Scored 1 conceded 14. Take your pick. Only made bearable by the lady in the Burger bar in the away end who used to tell me that we were the nicest and most polite away fans in the division.
