I would put it slightly differently. If we compare this seasons evolving squad with last seasons, midfield is looking pretty solid and more potent in an attacking sense. Up front we have now options. Big tall options that we never had last season. Those were our real weaknesses last season. Our defence was not.

The defence issue mainly comes down to a replacement for McClelland (and probably Brough though Broughs overall threat was as much to do with his ability to counter as it was his defensive capabilities). My gut also tells me that the plan this season will be to limit Warrens exposure by playing him a little further forward whilst providing better cover behind.

At our level McClelland is almost impossible to replace so no point trying to recreate that unless we have access to at least one high quality loanee (I wouldn't rule that out). I agree though that whatever tinkering is left to be done is probably going to be directed at strengthening the defensive unit.

Pete Wild has indicated that there could be two outgoings dependent on bringing in additional signings, with the acquisition of Emile Acquah I think one will be a forward and the other possibly a midfielder. My guess would be Richie Bennett and either Steve Foley or Elliot Newby.
Remember, doing a good job that goes unseen is like wetting yourself in a dark suit.

Wonder if we will have a change in shape this season? Two very good wingers now in Worral and Whitfield and obviously loads of height upfront. Might see a more traditional strike partnership and more width from midfield rather than wing backs perhaps

It's a difficult one , the 3 at the back is OK as long as you keep pressing but you often end up playing 5 at the back the back 3 must also be conformable playing the ball out personally I'd go for 4 4 2 or 4 3 3 but this is why we have all these friendlies so Pete can work on different scenarios apart from missing McClelland the signs are there that we'll have a decent squad ( famous last words!🤣)

Can see Bennett being the obvious one.
The other one could be a surprise - might even be someone like Gotts getting sold (no i'm not hinting he's going). There just isn't anyone else as obvious as Bennett.

Has to be Bennett, not a goal getter for me.

Wouldn’t loose sleep over gotts leaving (not that he is) Campbell seems more of a complete player in that role. And more of a goal threat

You can't judge Campbell over Gotts on that kick about last night!
