1972 how times have changed.

For all things Barrow AFC. Keep discussions civil and fair, we're all Barrow aren't we!

1972 how times have changed.

Post by FanzoneFan » Tue Jul 29, 2025 10:32 am

So here we are about to enter our sixth season back in the Football League and I’ll be honest I still pinch myself to think we’re back in the promised land. It was brought home even more when you consider Morecambe’s current predicament, there’s a suggestion on their fans forum that Workington may have voted against us when we applied for re-election in 1972. I find this hard to believe as I’m sure they would have wanted a local side to stay in the League. Does anyone know for sure ?

Incorrect. In the voting system the 1st and 2nd division clubs had 1 vote each. The 3rd and 4th divisions had 6 votes between them. Self interest resulted in the 3rd and 4th divisions votes being always cast in favour of the 4 clubs seeking re election. Also this was a secret vote, so no one really knows how each club voted. Although in 1972 Newcastle did come out and confirm that they had voted for Hereford.

Absolutely correct as far the 'the' vote was organised. Some former Workington directors, I guess might know how they voted in the Divs 3/4 pre-vote.

There has been a lot of noise over the years that Worky said no but I can't recall definite sources ever being quoted. Whatever, Workington now are not Workington then and I wish them well, as I do the Morecambe fans at this desperate time.

The first vote was tied at 26 each. Instead of the Chairman using his casting vote there was a second vote which Barrow lost by 29 votes to 23.

Not quite. The 3rd & 4th division clubs had 5 votes between them.

It's wrong. There were a total of 49 voting rights available - 1 each for the 44 1st & 2nd division clubs, plus 5 for the 3rd & 4th division clubs.

I was a apprentice and going home I bought the paper and in the stop press it showed we had tied on the first vote.
When I got home I found we had lost our league status
What a rocky ride since.
If we are relegated it's our own fault that vote was travesty.
The speedway track did not help but after we beat Hartlepool the then Manager made a complaint about it.
Who knows what this season will bring but we could do with a good cup run to boost the finances.
The defence is experienced but may not be as mobile because of their age.
Cannot see us getting many goals so we will . hopefully get alot of 1-0. wins.
Chesterfield will be a real test but not a defining one
