in reality most pitches are now a hybrid surface with woven fibers holding grass in place to produce a firm playing surface they are on the whole very good, never cut up, great for both sports. Headingley has one.

There's plenty of grounds out there nowadays that have rugby and football on.

Re: Would this be a viable alternative to redeveloping Holker Street
I wouldn't be in favour of it myself I'd prefer us to get a better Holker street
It is frustration that it's all a bit slow but any new look ground will last for years and years to come so rather it be spot on first.
There is a Barrow problem also of not feeling we are good enough that a crisis or disaster is just around the corner - it's a town thing too the whole town is 25 years behind everywhere else

While I am hopeful that supporters might be consulted on options (and, possibly more importantly, some of the details) I think we can be sure the owner will be taking the decisions.
Listen i didn`t say or make any of the previous quotes/details about future alterations to the ground it was one person Paul Casson,so don`t try to pick up on things i have said when it`s our owner who has made all comments regarding this!
I don`t mind being criticised on things i have stated but as usual people on here get at the wrong person(s) ,but i forgot we are not allowed to speak out against Paul Casson even if they are legitimate claims!
Re: Would this be a viable alternative to redeveloping Holker Street
Not criticising you. It was a simple, if possibly rhetorical, question.
Don't think anyone needs to be 'got at'; sure folks will be doing their best without a magic wand.

It IMO makes financial & practical sense for both codes to share facilities, Yes there will be some sound logical reasons & some daft prejudices as why we shouldn't, as we have a small isolated catchment area we should build a community shared stadium.
Advantages will outweigh the Negatives

Yes, and in the Premier League, IIRC, Leicester City play on this type of surface.Graythwaite Nick wrote:1-0 to you John.Has it been accepted in the Football League?
Re: Would this be a viable alternative to redeveloping Holker Street
I think the Football League chairman voted not to accept artificial pitches after indications were that they would do so. I haven't heard of EPL approving them.
As I understand it, Desso and other suppliers produce fully artificial surfaces and hybrid grass pitches where natural turf is strengthened by artificial fibres. A number of EPL and FL clubs use the latter which is classed as a grass pitch.

Re: Would this be a viable alternative to redeveloping Holker Street
I'm just thinking out loud and of course haven't lived in Barrow since 1972 and so don't know what various "green" areas are currently used for.
There is a pretty huge area on Schneider Road (other side of the ressie) which currently seems to house football pitches etc which seems even bigger than the Holker Street footprint. Is there any possibility of building here?
Or is that a complete non starter?

Re: Would this be a viable alternative to redeveloping Holker Street
I might have completely made this up, but I've got something in my head that the greenfields next to the resser used to be a reservoir itself, possibly used by the steelworks company or something? And was filled in at some point. If so not sure on the viability of building on such a place with the lack of decent solid foundation to dig down into?DaveP wrote:I'm just thinking out loud and of course haven't lived in Barrow since 1972 and so don't know what various "green" areas are currently used for.

But location and space wise it'd be very good I agree. Could even have access road direct from the A590, as theres something of a track up through the old derelict building there.

Yes it was indeed a reservoir, filled in a number of years ago (I can't remember when).Ste Story wrote: I might have completely made this up, but I've got something in my head that the greenfields next to the resser used to be a reservoir itself.
As a nipper, I was told that one reservoir was for cold water and the other for hot water.

This was going to be the original ground share plan back to back stand with 2 pitches, shafted by the council who were going to develop Cavendish Dock at the same time during the late 1980,s

Ormsgill pitches used to be a tip.
There was a story of a white bulge coming out of the ground on one if the pitches. Players just used to ignore it until one day they dug out a fridge.

I remember running through, one on one with the keeper and tripping over an old exposed piece of carpet.
Don't know if that would be classed as an artificial surface
