Perhaps we can ask our fans to die at more regular
intervals so as not to inconvenience others then.
I am sure they will oblige.

Exactly this. One minute. To remember. Be it one person or 5, one minute and a short announcement. It's the least we could do.

Or at large numbers at a time so we can have a minutes silence for them all at once.

Or become more like a soulless premier league club, where fans are walking cheque books and no one cares when you cark it. Unless there's some publicity to be had of course.
It's really not much to have one minute of respect is it? Lining up in front of the stand and handshakes take longer! If it's every week so what?

Premier teams cant really do it can they. Far too big of a fanbase.

Its the clubs responsibility to decide if and when to remember a member of the playing or internal staff. But it becomes very difficult when it comes to the clubs attitude towards individual supporters. You may have been a supporter for 10 years or 25 years and arguably have made more of a contribution to the club than a fan of 50 years. You may also have outlived numerous teams, managers and regimes. At the end of the days the supporters themselves are the rock on which the clubs memories are perpetuated. Some of our most long standing and loyal fans dont actually come from the town and may never have lived in it. If there was a minutes silence or applause for all of these fans when they passed then it would become very repetitive and lose the intended effect. And has already been stated we have sadly lost a fair number of long-standing loyal fans recently.

I wonder whether, if the wider footballing community associated with the club would like to register their sadness at the loss of a fan there may be better ways of doing it than interrupting games. One example might be for there to be some form of obituary for fans perhaps even attached to the forum or BAFC website where those that are no longer with us could remembered in a few paragraphs and/or with a picture. This actually would just involve stitching together and formalising what we already do. Sometimes I struggle to recall people from just their names or brief details about where they used to stand. I then find out later that I knew them either by sight or voice.

Especially now that Manchester and Liverpool seem to have extended their boundaries as far east as China.

But I'm talking about notable volunteers who have given a lot. Not just everyone. I mean, I don't expect a wreath in the centre circle if I cark it tomorrow!
I don't imagine premier league teams rely much on volunteers these days.

I have read all these comments with interest. I think the most salient point is that Brian Pilkington was not just any one of hundreds (or even thousands) of former players - - - he was an elite member of a very small band who gave us our greatest moment in our history thus far, a player who got us promotion from the 4th to the 3rd Division. Last year there was a very dignified tribute to Eric Harrison who had been in that same team back in 1966-67. Perhaps Eric's profile was higher because he attained a certain celebrity through his association with the Scholes et al "Class of '92". But, that notwithstanding, Eric was no more and no less a part of the glorious team of 66-67 than Pilky.

As mentioned, the vast majority would think "Brian who?" when the Pilkington name crops up as it is doing in this thread. That's okay because it was a long time ago and before most on this forum were born! But, to draw an analogy (and to greatly risk tempting fate), should we finish off the job this season then I am sure everybody on here would want to know that, Scott Quigley for example, will get a tribute when he passes away in the year 2083. Everybody on here knows that he would deserve to be remembered even though, in that far off time, there will only be very few from this forum still around. Most would be saying "Scott who?" just as most would say "Brian who?" right now in relation to Pilky.

I do understand that it is a difficult task to decide who deserves a tribute and which cases to just let slip by. But some cases will be very obvious and very deserving. I think Pilky is certainly one for the reasons already outlined. However, a pro-rata tribute to reflect "level of worthiness" would be a non-starter - - - otherwise with somebody like Spirit of 1990, not only am I going to find myself attending his funeral but would also find myself taking part not in a ONE MINUTE silence but a FIVE HOUR silence to reflect the measure of his contribution. And I guess that would mean it would have to take place after the match and not just before kick-off. And there goes the Saturday evening.

There was a dedication to Tony Lewis on the PA at Half Time in the Dover game

As everyone was milling around and chatting to friends etc. More like informing people about his passing than a dedication I would say.

Could perhaps respectfully do this once or twice a season. First game of the season and perhaps midway point of season. Fans who have passed could be remembered by reading out the names at half time and using the programme to include a photo and a message from loved ones/friends.

Do you really think anyone at half time is going to stand and listen to a list of names being read out? Too busy rushing to get a pint in before the second half starts or a toilet visit.
As I said at the start of this, and subsequent posts have backed it up---we can't spare 1 minute in our busy lives to pay a respectful silence at the passing of a fellow fan or player in the traditional way before kick off.
So sad really.

The only time for a one minute silence - or round of applause - is immediately before kick off, and perhaps should be reserved for notable former players and club officials, plus supporters who have made a major contribution to the club. Each would need to be decided on a case-by-case basis.

For others, perhaps a mention in the programme and/or over the PA system, again before the start of the match; just before the teams come out, maybe?
