I understand the misgivings about a minutes applause rather than a silence, but I remember a game that we lost after a minutes silence started the game.
May not have been anything to do with but the crowd and the players just seemed down and I can’t remember who the silence was for.
I think a minutes applause better celebrates the great part that the deceased has played for Barrow as a town and a club. That word celebration is what we should be looking at to reflect the positive things that were done, not a silence which obviously is subdued.
I have been to funerals of football fans and all those present were asked to wave football flags and scarves as the coffin came down the aisle and it set the tone for a very positive celebration of that persons life.

I think in there's a good point, the players on the pitch too need to understand why they're standing around getting cold, otherwise they're just standing around getting cold. What do the current (not just this current bit whenever) players know about the history of the club?

That’s a fair point Al.

The current players in general will not know the history of Barrow AFC and they really don’t need to. The problem could be overcome by someone - probably Evatt or a director - explaining in the dressing room briefly before the match who they were and what they did for the club.

Darren also gives the players history over the PA so players and younger spectators will know why they are being asked to recognise the role that player made to the club.

The point you made about players standing around freezing would be far better addressed with applause rather than silence.

Where have I said I don't like a minutes applause before a game? Stop being clever.
My reservations were about applause during a game for the reason I stated, if either side scored a goal. Would the players not celebrate or would they do so and then feel guilty?
As for Burnley despite standing in the cold they won 3-0.
I would hope our players know a little of the history of our club, but obviously not every player who has played for us. There are pictures and shirts all over the walls so some if it might have registered.

The point we are all trying to make is that the more regular this happens the less significant it gets.

Not to anyone who cares. Each of them are individuals who deserve respect and my post was in response to someone saying I didn't want applause before the match which was untrue.
