The above mentioned Mansfield game for me. Started with a near empty bus, sour, shite pints in the ground because there was no nearby pub, then a 7 nil whupping.
The following year rather than visiting again I went to Blackburn v Norwich with Adam29. The Barrow game ended up 8-1 and the Mansfield chairman gave Paul Cox his Aston Martin.

Probably the trip over the NE in the early 90’s where the game was called off as we’d virtually reached our destination. It was due to a combination of snow and wind, with the wind finally doing for us as it threatened to bring down a tree close to the ground.

Can’t remember who it was we were supposed to be playing....Bishop Auckland...? Something like that. A long slow journey there and an even slower one on the way back in the worsening conditions.

Whitley Bay indeed. We had a similar experience made slightly worse by being set upon by some locals in a nearby pub - The Foxhunters or something like that. In hindsight we had failed to notice that the bar staff suddenly disappeared as the pub began to fill quite rapidly with homies. Not too badly damaged we set off home and went via the Lakes - I guess Shap was snowbound. We stopped off for a pint in Keswick as we didn't think we would get much further; but somehow we did make it back.

There was a story in circulation that one supporter abondoned his vehicle and set off to walk ending up with frostbite, and eventually losing a leg. Poor bugger. I bet that tree is still standing.

Being a Barrow fan from Whitley Bay I'm finding it amusing (probably wasn't amusing at the time) that you were set upon from some locals in the Foxhunters pub, for most of my life it has been a fairly innocuous family pub with a massive soft play area, seems farfetched now but a good story nonetheless.

Mansfield x2 was calamitous. I remember travelling up on the train from London for the second one and saying "well at least it can't be as bad as last year". How wrong can you be?

The Bromley 5-0 and Alfreton 4-0 were bad also but I think the worst one was losing 2-1 at Hereford after being 1-0 up. Sean McConville decided to try his hand as a goalkeeper, giving away a penalty and getting sent off in the process. We grimly hung on until near the end despite virtually playing with 9 players thanks to Danny L Rowe's lack of effort before finally conceding. We then had a 4 hour journey home on London Midland so raided Morrisons for a huge stock of beer before boarding the train.

Being a Barrow fan from Whitley Bay I'm finding it amusing (probably wasn't amusing at the time) that you were set upon from some locals in the Foxhunters pub, for most of my life it has been a fairly innocuous family pub with a massive soft play area, seems farfetched now but a good story nonetheless.

I shouldn't have implied that it was the pub's regulars involved with the incident. There had been some problems in a recent game at Bishop Auckland and there was a decent mob lurking about ready to take issue with Barrow supporters. We guessed that they could have been Newcastle but we never really had a chance to chat. Luckily the Police intervened - maybe they had been tracking them all day. 'Farfetched' or 'amusing' it wasn't.

it was the foxhunters,my aunty lives round the corner from it.I wasnt at the game but went up to see her a few weeks later and went in there for a few beers.On the back of the toilet door someone had wrote Barrow AFC.Made me smile.Not a bad pub,was in there just before xmas

Didn't go to the Whitley Bay game but I remember the Bishop Auckland encounter. Pretty sure it was in the FA Trophy or may have been an FA Cup preliminary. A mob got onto the pitch and headed straight for us. We were in the paddock in front of the stand. Margaret (Club Director) tried to calm us down as they approached. After the game fights broke out in the snow, in the backstreets, next to where the coach was parked. I remember the police trying but failing to get on our coach. Eventually, they managed to open the fire exit door and tried to pull a lad off the bus called 'Lea**y. It turned into a tug of war with the police pulling his arms and us holding onto his legs

Frickley in the FA trophy during the middle of the miners strike. I had the misfortune to be in a pub where a barrow fan opened a full wallet in front of men who had been on strike for months and did the "loads of money" gag. I have never seen so many angry people in 1 pub in my life , he then ran for it we got s**t for being Barrow fans. then at the match we went 3-0 down pretty quick and some idiot started throwing bottles . a tannoy announcement treating to abandon the match got the reply" throw more bottles!"
