Disagree. As somebody who has watch all the Division 1 and Division 2 playoff matches I would say that the football played by Boreham Wood against Halifax was better than any I saw in the Division 2 playoffs and not far off the Division 1 playoffs. Many NL players over the last few seasons have joined higher league clubs and been very successful. Even at Pompey who have been promoted from Division 2 to Division 1 and have been in the Division 1 playoffs for the last 2 seasons they have had Jamal Lowe from non-league Hampton &Richmond who has moved up to the Championship and is a first team regular at Wigan, Ollie Hawkins from Daganham & Redbridge and the most recent Reeco Hackett-Fairchild from Bromley. There are very good players all over the National Leagues and IMO it doesn't matter whether they have played for us before or not if they are still good enough although I do agree that young players from a higher level are also well worth looking at. What I don't want to see coming in are 35 and 36 year old players who have been around a dozen clubs and are near the end of their careers who are just looking for a final pay day.EABluebird wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 12:08 pm Not sure any of these NL ex players would be suitable even though they might of been excellent in one or two seasons they were here - at NL level. For me we need young hungry players with a point to prove who perhaps who haven’t quite done it a higher level, supplemented by some young Championship loans with a smattering of league 2 stalwarts.
We should probably give 95% of NL players a wide berth also.
In this depressed market all of this is entirely possible.

I understand why the fans might think like that 48 years in the non league wilderness and apart from odd success it’s been pretty pretty dire stuff and where the EFL was seen as an impossible dream.Bradders wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 12:20 pmEABluebird wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 12:08 pm Not sure any of these NL ex players would be suitable even though they might of been excellent in one or two seasons they were here - at NL level. I think it’s natural to think of players who did well for us and against us after they left when talking about rumours. For me Williams would be a good signing Kay isn’t the natural left midfielder he was sometimes played as (in my opinion) so JW could fill a berth there. It’s been said many time’s aswell Jones did well second time round so it’s not always negative.
Also I don’t have an extensive knowledge of players on our radar and I don’t actually believe a lot of people do that pretend to either. That will grow hopefully the longer we stay in the league but right now my head and others will still be stuck in the national league for a while especially while we get the ground up to standards.
What IE did was show us that it IS possible with the right mentality and ideas. He may of left us now but we shouldn’t be throwing his blueprint in the bin just yet.
It’s true the ground needs a lot of work and thankfully we have a strong BoD who will get it done.
We are not a National League club anymore, that’s gone, that’s history, that’s a place I never want to watch Barrow ever again. Here’s to the next chapter of our club and let see where it takes us!

So by your strange logic Ian Evatt shouldn't have signed Sam Hird or Brad Barry as if they were that good they would have stopped Chesterfield being relegated from Division 2 in 2017-18 or John Rooney as if he was that good he would stopped Guiseley being relegated from the National League in 2017-18.PerthBluebird wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 11:59 pmErrrr williams failed at rochdale then failed at fylde To which fylde got relegated cant if he was that good he would have kept them up.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 8:56 pm Holt was an old man when he came back and Harrison had been ruined by injured and had failed at 2 NL clubs so it's a completely different situation. The fact that he's in a relegation squad makes his 15 goals even better and the fact that people would rule out a former player is just as stupid as the fact that some people would re-sign any former player!

Re: New Signings Rumours
Agreed we don’t want mercenaries just proven L2 standard players, not saying we should sign any players from the NL but only the very best available should be considered. I thought the NL play offs weren't all that - not terrible just nothing to write home about.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 12:41 pmDisagree. My view is it that their is no reason we can’t aim for the play offs, we might not succeed but we still should have more ambition than to simply survive. We are more than capable of making a decent fist of this season - with the right recruitment and attitude.
Re: New Signings Rumours
Im sure once the Manager gets in his no2 etc they'll have a list of targets. ATM its totally speculation going round. Im not against ex players coming back because they could do a good job although theres not many i can think of I'd want (Harrison was awful last season and must have been brought in on the cheap and i wasn't that impressed with Jones and he made a few errors) i wouldn't be shocked if Barrow were looking at him on loan again but I'd rather look at whos free or if we can afford it, buy some players. Quite a few of our lads have EFL experience and im not bothered where the new lads are from as long as they can improve the squad. I know we need around 10 players to make a healthy squad but we have the main players from last year available so if we can get the Blackburn lads back and maybe 3 - 5 qualify additional players esp a back up striker who can score ! We have the chance to easily be a top 8 team but I've said it before, im hopeful we are looking at a few of our current squad and considering offering better deals because if we play well this year most of our players are free to be snapped up.

Agree with your statement but sadly brad and sam where nt purchased for a price of 100,000 like williams was at fylde. Totally different.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 12:57 pmSo by your logic strange logic Ian Evatt shouldn't have signed Sam Hird or Brad Barry as if they were that good they would have stopped Chesterfield being relegated from Division 2 in 2017-18 or John Rooney as if he was that good he would stopped Guiseley being relegated from the National League in 2017-18.PerthBluebird wrote: ↑Sat Jul 18, 2020 11:59 pm
Errrr williams failed at rochdale then failed at fylde To which fylde got relegated cant if he was that good he would have kept them up.
All opinions expressed are my own , not here to cause kick off just enact debate.
Re: New Signings Rumours
A.F.C. Fylde did not pay £100.000. for Williams, Rochdale did, and released him after his 2 year deal was up, Fylde signed him as a free agent.PerthBluebird wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 7:03 pm

Re: New Signings Rumours
True but you can say that about any promoted teams and the teams that have gone up from the NL over the last 2 or 3 years haven't done too badly after promotion. Over the last 3 years 2 of the 6 made Division 1 and Lincoln comfortable there although Tranmere now back to 2. Salford and Forest Green comfortable in mid-table in 2 and Orient well safe from relegation. Only Macclesfield really have had problems.A.B. wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 6:10 pmVery difficult to compare like for like, primarily due to the quality of opposition.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 12:41 pm Disagree. Re: New Signings Rumours
I really dont know what some people expect when they talk about NL standard and L2 standard players. There are many NL players who are vastly superior to their L2 counterparts and some who L2 clubs could not afford to have in their team. Those are the strange times we live in. But I could put together an eleven from the NL that would walk L2. Its not the general calibre of individual players and not even the facilities they may or may not enjoy or the regimes they play under. Its pure finance (or has been). Its about putting together a group of 20 decent ones.jaycarter wrote: ↑Sun Jul 19, 2020 8:22 pmA.F.C. I also dont know where these assessments of Jordan Williams come from. After arriving from Northwich he played 70 games for us, was grabbed by Rochdale for what now looks like an inflated transfer fee played about 40 odd games for Rochdale during which he spent a couple of months on loan to Lincoln, then in League 2. His progress or lack of it has undoubtedly been hindered by the fee associated with him and his salary. So he ends up at Fylde with a bunch of talented misfits who cant be whipped into a proper unit and all of whom are overpaid by that barmpot of a Chairman.
In total that accounts for 140 appearances at NL level or above. People talk of him now as if he's one of yesterdays men. But he's hardly had a career! He's clearly been pushed too hard and too fast and someone really did a job on selling him to Rochdale (that would be Casson or Cox). I've rarely if ever seen him play a bad game and I reckon L2 is probably his true level. I think he'd be back willingly if we could accommodate him and his current club chairman but as he is still under contract I'm not holding my breath. I think he would fit perfectly into our tight knit squad and he knows the club and appreciates the supporters. But I doubt we could afford him.
Re: New Signings Rumours
There will be good players in the NL but alot will be down to how the team is structured and motivated.
A prime example is John Rooney when he came he had spent time playing at Chester York and Guiseley all lower none league.
I think Peter Atherton and Ian Evatt some how made him a better player

Re: New Signings Rumours
To be honest, I think the main thing that made him a better player was (and credit to Evatt and/or Atherton for this) playing in a team which passed the ball as opposed to the normal NL and lower EFL divisions which hit the ball long most of the time and bypass midfield. The style of football which Evatt insists on playing is the type which actually suits the skill which Rooney obvioiusly has always had but which probably lay dormant for years! If Paul Cox had signed Rooney for his team I don't think we would have been singing his praises in the way most of us did last season as the ball would normally have been zooming over his head!!Pedro wrote: ↑Mon Jul 20, 2020 9:17 am There will be good players in the NL but alot will be down to how the team is structured and motivated.
