Oldham v Barrow match thread

Must admit, it felt a bit eerie before the game without any pre-match music and announcements of teams etc over the tannoy. Not sure it helped with there being very few home fans with masses of empty seats all over the place.

Think Oldham need to be told the tannoy was not working in the away end. It's a safety issue

Names of soccer players are very different these days, many very exotic and some difficult to pronounce. But seeing the Jimmy Frizzell stand at Boundary Park yesterday set me thinking that I have never known of anybody else with the name Frizzell, inside or outside of football. What a great name, almost an old-fashioned comic-book footballer's name. But who was Jimmy Frizzell? Actually he was a great Oldham stalwart, ten years as a player and then another twelve as a manager. Obviously I am delighted that we beat them yesterday but at the same time I hate to see any small club having a crisis as all small clubs have their work cut out to keep going. I guess Oldham could do with a few extraordinary characters like Frizzell at the moment. Below is an EM picture of him in action at Holker Street on 7th October 1968. Barrow won 2-1 and this was just weeks before we hit the very summit of the old Division 3 (if only for less than a day). Between the two Jimmy's, Frizzell and Mulholland, we can see Brian Arrowsmith in the distance. The picture is looking towards the Holker Street end in the distance.

PJ the name Frizzell hails from Scotland. However it probably has Norman origins coming from the french “Frisselle”. Jimmy Frizzell was himself.a Jock of course.. Also when I started work in Manchester in the early 80s Frizzell were a major Manchester based Insurance Broker. I understand some members of the Frizzell tribe are still operating there.

And so to something completely different . . .

We look to our big striker Zanzala to show power and strength to lead the line and he has been seen to do that well so far. But having looked back at his goal yesterday it's the mentalistic aspects that impress me the most there . . . the composure and intelligence he shows when finishing. If he had rushed and struck it with his left there's a strong chance his shot might have cannoned off the keeper's body. So I just love the way he pauses for a split second and thinks about it, opening his own body up to enable him to curl it round the keeper into the far corner with his right. Cool, clever, a thinking man's finish. Well done, Offrande, a footballing brain on show there.

I know what you mean PJ. When he came on late at Accrington on Tuesday he struggled to adjust immediately to the pace of the game and looked a bit awkward. But once he adjusts his movement becomes much more intuitive and he flows with the ball. When he does that he looks a cut above anybody else on the park.

We should enjoy him whilst we can. I have to say that if he continues to play like this he'll increasingly be noticed. Early days but I could see an attractive offer being made for him at the end of the season.

On the Quest EFL Highlights show Mark Bright said Zanzala could play Championship/League 1 and also good friend of his. Good getting Gotts & Stevens on 2 year contracts going to be very good players which hopefully we can benefit from in the future.

Thought Zanzi also changed his style on Saturday. Didn’t waste his time trying to wrestle with Pierregianni but once he had the ball on the floor he just killed him. I expect Mr Cooper had a word in his ear before the game which might explain his celebration .

Brings back a memory of when we went to the, I think, Northern Premier League Cup Final at Maine Road on a bus organised by Tony Jackman. It was after our Herculean Trophy replays against Enfield and the consequent fixture congestion meant we were exhausted. Again I think it was Goole Town who beat us. After the game we went in the City supporters club where there was a presentation night on. To cut to the chase I had to go for a wee and who was stood next to me but Jimmy Frizzell the then City manager or General manager not sure which. Thought it was the wrong place to ask for his autograph.

Taylor wont play many this season but you cannot fault that performance on saturday he wears his heart on his sleeve he was immense

Just watched the highlights. How did we get away without a penalty late on in second half when Banks leaned on their number 8 then pushed him on the neck with the ref watching just two or three yards away?

Same way Villa got away with one. Refs are [SwearFilter] clueless.
