This weekend will see the third EFL fixture between Mansfield Town and Barrow since the return of the Bluebirds to the EFL last season.

Last season, Barrow beat the Stags twice. The first occasion, a 4-2 for Barrow at One Call Stadium a year ago, was Barrow’s first victory in the EFL since April 22, 1972, when Workington were beaten at Holker Street to a 2-0 scoreline. Last season’s Barrow victory, which also resulted in the sacking of Graham Coughlan as Stags’ boss, was the Bluebirds’ eighth of all time.

And at Barrow, two second-half goals in quick succession steered the Bluebirds to the first one of four consecutive victories on the road to safety.

And if previous games between the sides are something to go by, there should be a few goals this Saturday

The sides also clashed in the Conference National for five seasons running from 2008-09 onwards, but Barrow’s two latest visits to north Nottinghamshire ended in heavy defeats, 7-0 in March 2012 and 8-1 the following year. The latter game was also the first time since November 30, 1963, Barrow had conceded eight goals in a FL and Conference fixture (details might be wrong here). On November 30, 1963, Barrow lost at Aldershot in Division Four to an 8-2 scoreline.

But over the years dating back to the 1930’s, Barrow had also won convincingly at Field Mill, now One Call Stadium. On two occasions, Barrow did record 5-0 victories. The first one as far back as in November 1933, the second one on the opening day of the 1954-55 old Division 3 (N) campaign.

When Barrow gained promotion to the third tier in 1967, they managed the unusual feat to score in EVERY away game then, and then went on to score in their first four fixtures on the road in the third division. The third of those games was played at Mansfield.

The Stags v Barrow fixture at Field Mill in the 2010-11 was postponed twice before being played on April 12, 2011, in front of the lowest post-WW II Field Mill league crowd, a paltry 1253 (71Barrow fans, details checked).

Thank you for all that information. From the lengthy list of players who have featured for both clubs I could say things about quite a number of them but as that would be a long task I will just select one and that one is Keith Kennedy. I hadn't realised Keith had played for Mansfield but I recall he was a stalwart for Bury (captain too I believe) for many years. In our Northern Premier League title triumph of 1983-84 he played in midfield and did well. However the following season he reverted to what I believe was his more customary role of left full-back and I recall him as outstanding in that position. His more famous brother, Alan, also played for a short while at Barrow towards the end of his career in the mid 1990's. The thing I would say about Keith is that aside from being a brilliant full-back he always came across as the most professional of professionals who we Barrow followers knew would never ever fall short of 100% serious commitment in every game he played.
