We scored from a corner on the opening day…Desmond2-2 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 17, 2023 6:46 pm Having watched every game so far this season,I do think we have a very good squad, but lack the goals up front, I’ve said this from day one. One thing that does baffle me, is that we persist with the long throw in, yet never create anything from it, also we have been awarded the 3rd highest number of corners, yet never get on the end of them, bizarre really considering the manager says it’s something we work on, in training.

Out of interest who do you see Whitfield replacing? Not saying your wrong at all (and I rate Whitfield) but unless him or Worrall get shoehorned into left wing back I’m just not sure where he plays

I agree. And to be honest, Dom Telford hasn't exactly set the world alight, either. Garner has been a total flop. Jury still out on Telford - 4 games now without a goal. Hardly the prolific striker he was touted to be. Emile Acquah looks the most promising. I believe his full potential has yet to be fufilled.Desmond2-2 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 16, 2023 5:03 pm What an absolute pile of shite, we are a decent team, with absolute useless forwards. Garner and Proctor are pathetic.
Regarding the game itself. They were there for the taking. A resolute defence, yes; but playing with 10 men. Our forwards looked devoid of any creativity or imagination around or inside the penalty area. Tienesa was the only player who performed with any flare - and he's a full back! Alas, it was his mistake due to losing the ball that led to Newport's goal but his continual runs up the wing and crosses into the box more than compensated for that error and his penalty area crosses should have been met with more purpose from our impotent strike force. He reminds me of Remeao Hutton who previously did a similar job for us. And who I was sorry to see depart.
That's two matches now where we've failed to break down a 10 man side. We also had 7 corners during the game without any reward. In a previous game (think it was Accrington Stanley) we had 10! Definitely something that needs working on.
Not a gloom and dispondency opinion. Because we look more than capable of holding our own in this divison. However, we're still a work in progress and I do believe the major flaws in the squad reside among our strikers. It could be that they hold us back from being among the top 4 at the end of this season.

Would the other match be the Sutton game? The one that we won?

Telford has played in 3 games the first of which was a 20 min cameo. Rather harshSea Dog Sam wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 4:06 pmI agree. Harsh? I think not - 3 games + 20 mins for a reputedly 'prolific goal scorer' who has yet to find the back of the net. Apart from not scoring he hasn't really done anything to get the crowd going, has he? From what I've seen of him, so far - he looks a spent force. Maybe Crawley - like Fleetwood with Garner - knew getting rid was good business?Big_Bluebird wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 5:05 pmTelford has played in 3 games the first of which was a 20 min cameo. Which was the other one then?
Re: Newport County v Barrow match thread
If not harsh, perhaps a little hasty. Sometimes takes more than three games for a new player and a team to get used to each other, particularly when most of the games have been away.
Re: Newport County v Barrow match thread
I was there and would say that at least show some fight and determination while getting used your new team mates. Tiensa has been a good example of this.

Re: Newport County v Barrow match thread
Not sure whether these comments are primarily aimed at performances or results. Either way far too early to be making sweeping generalisations. Comparisons with last season are pretty meaningless so far given the way our fixtures have played out. The fact that they have been predominantly away also creates false perceptions because so few teams set up the same way as at home. I actually think that the run of away games does help in one sense in that the team actually has become more proficient in their preferred shape and set up. The pressures are different to playing at home.
PWs teams are now comfortable playing several formations and that has improved considerably in twelve months. But there is a common thread that runs through his preferred style that wont change. This is based on building teams from the back, becoming effective out of possession and then having the tools to counter effectively. He has also developed the physicality and fitness of the squad. They are IMO now a proper League 2 outfit.
But with this style of play they are never going to overwhelm opponents on a regular basis nor will they be anywhere near the top of the Expected Goals table. The issue of playing sides with 10 men is actually quite relevant because the way we set up though great for holding on to any current advantage is not particularly conducive to exploiting 10 man situations. For that you need to go and watch Swindon. But Swindon will most probably concede more goals that us this season no matter where we both end up.
I think what is and will emerge on this forum is a debate about how interesting or exciting we are to watch rather than what results we get. This will become lively if as PW wants, that we can cruise along at roughly 1.5 points a game until the New Year. Because then questions will be asked about how we find an additional "gear" to sustain some form of challenge. Atm however I'm still enjoying getting used to how technically proficient we are beginning to look to be that worried about style of play.

Wild often quotes - “we need to be the best version of ourselves”. If we can consistently be the best version of ourselves then we can be a top 7 side. It’s at home where I hope we always try and play on the front foot no matter who we are up against. Don’t want opp teams dominating possession at HS.Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Tue Sep 19, 2023 12:29 pm

Re: Newport County v Barrow match thread
I think current team and formation he would have to be put into that left wing back role as Tiensia is still young and learning and is going to need rested at some point. Whitfield rarely lasts a full game though so I'd expect Wild to switch it up a bit between them. Possibly even on the left of a 3-4-3 if we try that again. Brough could put a wicked ball in from that side and defensively was pretty solid so big boots for Tiensia to fill but he looks to have potential. Whitfield probably less so defensively but was right up there with assists last season, so depending on the opposition that might be a factor in who plays too.HenneysKnee wrote: ↑Mon Sep 18, 2023 2:06 pmOut of interest who do you see Whitfield replacing? Not a bad problem to have though!
I can't believe people are writing Telford off already - any player needs a dozen games before they can really be judged. He has pedigree, is still relatively young, give him a chance. If he was going to score 4 in 4 then he probably wouldn't have ended up here would he. Garner I agree looks a bit off it though and maybe in time a loan out might get him going again, looks short on confidence. To think last season though we had Moyo and Bennett upfront at one point...

Come on, nobody it writing him off, anyone who knows football and has watched him in his time with us,can see what talented lad he is. So far we’ve seen some nice touches and link up play from him,I’m just not sure the way we attack and our quality in the final third is gonna complement him. We will get it right I’m sure.
