Released/Retained
Re: Released/Retained
I don't want to comment about released/retained as it will be down to Pete, but (reminded by the 'old boys' thread elsewhere) one thing I would like to see in new signings is a young, athletic central defender in the Sam Mclelland mould. I think someone like him might have stopped some of the danger from opponents getting onto passes that got through and behind our central defenders - especially later in the season where, possibly, a weakness had been spotted..
Re: Released/Retained
One look at goals and assists stats and we've only had one player in the top 40 for goal and assists. Kian Spence. With 9 goals (finished as our top goalscorer) and 6 assists from a midfield role. He has been outstanding and a consistent performer.
https://www.espn.co.uk/football/stats/_/league/eng.4
Let’s hope we can keep hold of Kian Spence.

Re: Released/Retained
Was thinking the same. You can’t unilaterally players under contract. Otherwise Duffus would have gone long since. Just as you don’t release players on loan or at the end of their contracts.behind the goals wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 11:53 am What do some supporters not understand you just can't release players on contract unless you pay them in full that's why contracts are signed all players will be paid until June 30th regardless if retained or released, Maybe Garner and Telford could come to some mutual agreement with the Club for release of contracts
Those were the good old days when a club had some level of control over their players.

Spot on Jim. The lack of another decent defender caught us out in the end , and someone with pace at the back who can defend too would be perfect to complement Canavan . George and Chester (if he stays).Jim wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 12:30 pm I don't want to comment about released/retained as it will be down to Pete, but (reminded by the 'old boys' thread elsewhere) one thing I would like to see in new signings is a young, athletic central defender in the Sam Mclelland mould. Re: Released/Retained
Ultimately yes he is a player that you build your team around but he’s also a player that if there is interest in him we need to take advantage of that - can’t keep relying on the board putting their hands in their pockets to fund the transfer activity (remember that as the trust owns 10% then the support would have to stump up 10% of whatever the budget is)Jonty wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 12:35 pm One look at goals and assists stats and we've only had one player in the top 40 for goal and assists. Pete Wild admitted in my last interview with him that the club need to start moving people on and bringing in the next ones to ultimately one day do the same again
Re: Released/Retained
I understand the ownership model but how do we go that extra step if every player that improves us draws interest and effectively the Barrow Manager is left with the task of trying to build a team to challenge and the club need to balance the books. It’s catch 22.Adam29 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 2:40 pmUltimately yes he is a player that you build your team around but he’s also a player that if there is interest in him we need to take advantage of that - can’t keep relying on the board putting their hands in their pockets to fund the transfer activity (remember that as the trust owns 10% then the support would have to stump up 10% of whatever the budget is)Jonty wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 12:35 pm One look at goals and assists stats and we've only had one player in the top 40 for goal and assists. Out of the current squad I think both Kian Spence and Dean Campbell are our brightest potential. I am sure we have good sell on clauses with both.
Could do with the Premier League agreeing the fund distributions with the EFL that would help if the EFL gets a good deal. We also probably had record gate revenues last season in the entire history of the club.

Re: Released/Retained
That last para is interesting Adam.
Moving decent players on for a profit is very much aimed at confronting the sustainability issue. Which by the way is not a bad thing.
However if you take the view that longer term viability is more important than short term gain then we inevitably need to manage our expectations with regards to promotion.
I’m sure that there must have been a lot a disappointment in the Boardroom on Saturday. But I do wonder whether some of that would have been tempered by the avoidance of any new issues associated with surviving in L1.
Let’s put it this way. The prospect of losing Spence or Campbell would have been far more devastating to a team trying to come to terms with L1 than it might be in L2. Promotion to L1 would have done very little to secure our long term financial sustainability.

If we lose Spence and Campbell then some very good signings will have to be made to get players of their level.Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 3:27 pm That last para is interesting Adam.

I certainly wouldn't bet on the current team without those 2 surviving in EFL2 next season.

Re: Released/Retained
New investment is needed to help the current owners before we can entertain the idea of being in Division one IMO. The current owners have done fantastically well but they don't have a bottomless pit of money and cannot keep covering our losses year on year. Promotion under our current owners would have resulted in them having to stump even more money up as we do not have a ground with a big enough capacity to financially sustain a club at league one level. You need at least a 10,000 capacity ground with an away capacity of 2000 to financially sustain a side in league one IMOSuffolk Blue wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 3:27 pm That last para is interesting Adam.

surely the problem is lack of service poor set pieces and crosses it`s a myth about strikers having to have pace !russell_anderson wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 3:45 pmAgreed but the lack of a striker with any pace caused just as many problems for us.blumooncrab wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 1:57 pm

Re: Released/Retained
As others have said, I would move Garner, Worrall and possibly Feely (decent squad player) if any offers came/an agreement can be reached between the player and club. As for pacy strikers, plenty of individual strikers (many in this league) who are not exactly Usain Bolt have bagged more goals than all our strikers combined.

Re: Released/Retained
Pete Wild has said on more than one occasion, including, as Adam says, his latest interview, that the model he was brought in to develop included that of finding talent that maybe others hadn't spotted and being able to move them on at a profit. If we do it with those 2 there's absolutely no reason why there won't be another 2 gems out there that he and Iain Wood have spotted and are courting. We supporters are going to have to accept that because from the board's point of view that way sustainability lies.russell_anderson wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 3:50 pmIf we lose Spence and Campbell then some very good signings will have to be made to get players of their level.Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 3:27 pm That last para is interesting Adam.

Re: Released/Retained
Yes I agree . Ben W has plenty of pace. Newby is great at carrying but his final pass is often poor and his finishing is awful (no goals and only 6 assists) . Hardly any service from right flank this year .blue nige wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 4:08 pmsurely the problem is lack of service poor set pieces and crosses it`s a myth about strikers having to have pace !russell_anderson wrote: ↑Tue Apr 30, 2024 3:45 pm Agreed but the lack of a striker with any pace caused just as many problems for us.
