Such shocking news. Steve Higgins was an excellent right full-back. He was solid as a defender but of course he was memorable as a an attacking full-back marauding down the right flank. I do believe he is the first of our 1990 team to depart this world. One thing is for sure and that is that his place in our folklore can never be erased whenever we care to take a look at the 1990 match on DVD. That glorious sunny day on May 19th 1990 was one of those all-too-rare Lou Reedian occasions when absolutely everything went well . . . and Steve Higgins shone as brightly as any.

I seem to recall that when we arranged a reunion for that 1990 squad to play a friendly at Holker Street in the summer of 2000 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Wembley win there was some difficulty in tracking down the whereabouts of Steve Higgins! Fortunately they "found" him and sure enough Steve came along to play in that game in 2000. If I remember rightly only Cowps of all people was missing because he had to honour a long-standing arrangement to attend a wedding. Even Kenny Gordon flew back from Australia to play in it.

Steve Higgins was just naturally skilful and naturally composed and never gave the impression of being fazed by anything on the pitch. The cross he provided for Kenny Gordon's crucial first goal was not exactly surprising as he regularly delivered a decent ball when joining the attack. We should also remember that before the 1990 Trophy win at Wembley Steve had been a member of our 1988-89 title-winning team when we got promoted back to the Conference. What a very good player and what a sad moment for Barrow AFC. Condolences to all his family.
