I agree that "proven goalscorer" is too much to expect. They are quite rare creatures at our level - perhaps Andy Cook and Jack Muldoon. Looking back at last season, Cole Stockton didn't exactly transform our fortunes, although he did get a few goals early on. Ceartinly, if we could find someone who can grab a goal out of nothing, either a 'worldie' or simply barging his way through to score like Quigley did occasionally, we would score a few more in spite of not playing well, but I think a lot of the problem is in the way we play and the inability to find a player in a scoring position in the box.
For goodness sake! How does any club at this level find a goalscorer? All you need is a 'scout' with an eye for a player. They are everywhere if you look. The 24 leading goalscorers in our league range from 10 down to 4. The top 3 have 10 and one of them is Cheek of Bromley who was playing in the National League last season. Another on 9 goals is Lowe of Walsall who is 19 and is on loan from Stoke. If you can't afford to spend much money you go to those 2 routes, either non-league or loan but you HAVE to be able to pick a player. Whoever picked our strikers couldn't pick his nose!!
Dom Telford was leading scorer in L2 with Newport and was in the EFL team of the year. It was a great signing on paper but it just hasn’t worked out for him him . I hoped he’d be the one yard tap in specialist but the system we played under Wild and now with Clemence is reliant on width and doesn’t suit his game. How can Telford out muscle the centre half’s? He needs the ball played through to him at his feet to or play with a second striker. It’s never going to work for him in the system we play.
"To achieve anything and to get to the Football League, we have to expect to win every game. I've got to get everyone believing that we can, and I will work hard to embed that mentality into the players, the town, the board and whoever else” Ian Evatt.
