Re: Released/Retained
Croasdale would be the perfect signing. Goes under the radar how good he was for them. Does all there dirty work and frees up the other midfielders to create chances

Re: Released/Retained
You're correct. In fact, all of Canavan, Ray and Chester lack pace. Canavan is the currently the outstanding player of the 3 although I would have said Ray edged Chester in terms of performance last season. However, as you have said a central defender with pace is needed as is a striker with pace. Anybody who doesn't think pace is not needed for success at any level of professional football really doesn't have a clue. A prime example of that was watching Casemiro and Evans playing for Manchester United against Crystal Palace last night. Both good players but Eze, Olise and Mateta just ran past them at will because they have lost their pace. The same applies in all leagues to a greater or lesser extent.Mark Johnson wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 2:09 pmI am not saying Ray should have been released - I'm saying now that he has been, I can almost guarantee they will sign a younger centre half (possibly even on loan) who is quicker.Desmond2-2 wrote: ↑Sun May 05, 2024 12:28 pm
I actually do have a clue Mr Johnson, and in my opinion Ray was one of the best defensive players in league 2 last season, he has all the attributes to do well at this level, personally Chester should have been released,he lacked pace, isn’t the tallest for a centre back, and dallied on the ball and was dispossessed far to many times recently. But in PW I trust.
If you ask Chester and Ray they type of player they would like beside them, I bet someone with pace who is quick on the turn is what they would want 100%
Ray isn't quick mate. Not saying he's a carthorse but there are much quicker centre halves out there
We have our own examples at Barrow. Byron Harrison was a terrific striker until his injury but following that he had lost his pace and became ineffective. Dior Angus had little ability but did have great pace and scored goals in Ian Evatt's team mostly tap-ins because he had the pace to get into the 6 yard box.

Indeed, or to a lesser extent Ian Evatt!GTBLUE wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 6:12 pmHave you ever heard of Pep Guardiola !!!!Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Mon May 06, 2024 9:56 am Playing out from the back. If you want to start an argument between supporters this is the topic to choose.I don’t know who ordained that football should be played that way but it seems to have become mainstream.
The problem with PW advocating it, is simply that we are not a possession based team. We are generally happy letting teams have the ball so when we do get it, and then play keep ball, we tend to play sideways.
We also have a problem in transition hence PW’s renewed focus on pace in defence and midfield. If you can’t move the ball quickly while trying to keep it then you inevitably make mistakes and it does not look good.

Touche. I did actually take a sentence out of the last post which actually said "I blame Guardiola".
In the same way that in life we have all been bombarded with images of perfectly shaped models wearing perfectly fitted clothes that somehow still make me look like I've been dragged through a hedge backwards when I put them on, then in football we are all encouraged to play systems invented by the great and good and played by footballers who's bottoms most of our squad will never be good enough to wipe.
This isn't a criticism. Merely a statement of fact. We are all followers (apart from Pep obviously). Strangely you can adopt this style whether you are PW or Ian Evatt. Whether you are a side that likes possession and is overtly attack minded or one that is content without the ball but then needs to make use of it when you get it. Neither am I judging the two managers. But it is fair to say that the effect of not playing the system well or making mistakes is much more visible in a team that plays PWs kind of football. Supporters tend to be more forgiving if you've shipped a few goals when you are banging them in at the other end. In so far as Evatt has weaknesses, and they have been there this season at Bolton if you want to seek them out, they have tended to be neutralised by the more attractive aspects of Bolton's play.
Re: Released/Retained
We may criticise some of Pete Wild's tactics and decisions, but looking at our time back in EFL he is a definite improvement on Dunn, Jolley, Cooper and Brown.

Re: Released/Retained
Every manager has weaknesses but some a lot more than others. Most supporters care little about the style of football their teams play as long as they are successful. A few of the more discerning ones are as interested in the style of play as the success although I would say that more often than not one goes with the other.Suffolk Blue wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 12:12 pmTouche.
